At Mattins The Eighth Morning Gospel The Reading is from the Holy Gospel according to St. John John 20:11-18 At that time, Mary stood without at the sepulchre weeping: and as she wept, she stooped down, and looked into the sepulchre, And seeth two angels in white sitting, the one at the head, and the other at the feet, where the body of Jesus had lain. And they say unto her, Woman, why weepest thou? She saith unto them, Because they have taken away my LORD, and I know not where they have laid him. And when she had thus said, she turned herself back, and saw Jesus standing, and knew not that it was Jesus. Jesus saith unto her, Woman, why weepest thou? whom seekest thou? She, supposing him to be the gardener, saith unto him, Sir, if thou have borne him hence, tell me where thou hast laid him, and I will take him away. Jesus saith unto her, Mary. She turned herself, and saith unto him, Rabboni; which is to say, Master. Jesus saith unto her, Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father: but go to my brethren, and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father, and your Father; and to my God, and your God. Mary Magdalene came and told the disciples that she had seen the LORD, and that he had spoken these things unto her.

The reading is from the Second Epistle of St. Paul to the Corinthians.
Brethren,
the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which is blessed for
evermore, knoweth that I lie not. In Damascus the governor under Aretas
the king kept the city of the Damascenes with a garrison, desirous to
apprehend me: And through a window in a basket was I let down by the wall,
and escaped his hands. It is not expedient for me doubtless to glory. I
will come to visions and revelations of the Lord. I knew a man in Christ
above fourteen years ago, (whether in the body, I cannot tell; or whether
out of the body, I cannot tell: God knoweth;) such an one caught up to the
third heaven. And I knew such a man, (whether in the body, or out of the
body, I cannot tell: God knoweth;) How that he was caught up into
paradise, and heard unspeakable words, which it is not lawful for a man to
utter. Of such an one will I glory: yet of myself I will not glory, but in
mine infirmities. For though I would desire to glory, I shall not be a
fool; for I will say the truth: but now I forbear, lest any man should
think of me above that which he seeth me to be, or that he heareth of me.
And lest I should be exalted above measure through the abundance of the
revelations, there was given to me a thorn in the flesh, the messenger of
Satan to buffet me, lest I should be exalted above measure. For this thing
I besought the Lord thrice, that it might depart from me. And he said unto
me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in
weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities,
that the power of Christ may rest upon me. Alternatively this Apostle reading for the All Saints of Cyprus Prokhimenon. Tone 8. [Psalm 67] Verse: God is wonderful in His saints. Verse: Bless ye God in the congregations. The reading is from the Epistle of St. Paul to the Hebrews. Hebrews 11: 33-40, 12: 1-2 Brethren, all the saints through faith subdued kingdoms, wrought righteousness, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions. Quenched the violence of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, out of weakness were made strong, waxed valiant in fight, turned to flight the armies of the aliens. Women received their dead raised to life again: and others were tortured, not accepting deliverance; that they might obtain a better resurrection: And others had trial of cruel mockings and scourgings, yea, moreover of bonds and imprisonment: They were stoned, they were sawn asunder, were tempted, were slain with the sword: they wandered about in sheepskins and goatskins; being destitute, afflicted, tormented; (Of whom the world was not worthy:) they wandered in deserts, and in mountains, and in dens and caves of the earth. And these all, having obtained a good report through faith, received not the promise: God having provided some better thing for us, that they without us should not be made perfect. Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith. Alleluia [3]. Tone 4 [Psalm 33] Verse: The righteous cried, and the Lord hearken unto them. Verse: Many are the afflictions of the righteous: but out of them all the Lord will deliver them.
The Gospel Reading The Reading is from the Holy Gospel according to St. Luke Luke 6:31-36 The Lord said: As ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise. For if ye love them which love you, what thank have ye? for sinners also love those that love them. And if ye do good to them which do good to you, what thank have ye? for sinners also do even the same. And if ye lend to them of whom ye hope to receive, what thank have ye? for sinners also lend to sinners, to receive as much again. But love ye your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing again; and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be the children of the Highest: for he is kind unto the unthankful and to the evil. Be ye therefore merciful, as your Father also is merciful.
